Auro 11.1 is an advanced sound technology containing an immersive sound with 9.1 and 13.1  speaker systems. This latest technology is based on existing (2 dimensional) 5.1 surround sound configuration, augmented with height channels above the existing three channels to give enhanced sound experience. The Auro 11.1 system is built using surround, height and top layers. The surround is for sounds generating from around the listener, the height layer reproduces sounds coming slightly from an altitude of 30 degree and the top layer is for overhead or other special effects. The Auro 11.1 concept and listening format conceived some seven years ago aims to create most efficient 3-D sound reproduction system without compromise on quality. Auro 11.1 is developed by Auro Technologies and powered by Barco for the cinema industry.

This system requires additional speakers and 2-K processors. The sound effect is said to be superior if the movies are recorded using compatible technology as in the case of 'Vishwaroopam,' aTamil movie, starring Kamal Haasan which has been recorded using 3-D technology, and it is the first film to use Auro 11.1 in India. In India for the first time, 2 multiplexes (Satyam & Mayajaal) and single screen (Sundar) in Chennai adopted this technology. DRC Cinemas, a Multiplex in Mysore was second in the country and first in the state of Karnataka to have this advanced sound technology, after Chennai,Tamil Nadu.
